CovPass is an app for residents of Germany. It lets them load an EU Digital COVID Certificate for their Covid-19 vaccination onto their smartphone. They can then show it as needed. What’s more, the app can also be used to manage certificates for recovery from a Covid-19 infection. The app is a free service provided by the Robert Koch Institute. Using it is voluntary. Please be aware that the CovPass-App can only read certificates (i.e. QR codes) that meet European requirements. For example, a German-language vaccination certificate can be identified by the heading ‘EU COVID-19 Impfzertifikat’ or 'EU Digitales COVID-Impfzertifikat' (‘EU COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate’ or 'EU Digital COVID-Vaccination Certificate' in English). The EU Digital COVID Certificates can be issued by vaccination centres, doctor’s offices and pharmacies. Recovery certificates are currently only issued by doctor’s offices.

How the CovPass-App works

  1. 1

Load the EU Digital COVID Certificate onto your smartphone

Download the CovPass-App onto your smartphone and open the app. Hold your smartphone’s camera above the QR code and use the CovPass-App to scan the EU Digital COVID Certificate. The certificate and the QR code will be loaded onto your smartphone together.

You can obtain an EU Digital COVID Certificate directly after vaccination from a vaccination centre, doctor’s office or subsequently in pharmacies. Recovery certificates are only issued by doctor’s offices.

The CovPass-App displays your QR code

Using your QR code, you can show evidence of a valid EU Digital COVID Certificate for vaccination or recovery. Your current QR code is displayed directly in the CovPass-App after scanning it. When your QR code is checked, the only information displayed is the certificate status, your first name(s), your surname and your date of birth. If you have saved a vaccination or recovery certificate in the CovPass app, you can also download it as a PDF document to your smartphone and print it out if needed.

A QR code for full vaccination only becomes valid two weeks after your final vaccine dose. This is because vaccines only become sufficiently effective once two weeks have passed.

    Check certificate validity

If you are planning to travel, you can use the CovPass-App to check beforehand if your vaccination or recovery certificate is valid in a certain country. The app checks your certificate against the travel regulations applicable in your chosen destination country. Travel regulations can change at any time. To be sure, you should also always look up information on the Re-open EU website. This website contains the current regulations.

Do you have questions?

  • How do I get the digital EU Digital COVID Certificate?

All vaccinated citizens can receive an EU Digital COVID Certificate if desired. This certificate is issued in vaccination centres, medical practices, health departments or pharmacies. Bring proof of your received COVID vaccination(s) or your yellow vaccination record and an ID document to receive your certificate. A separate certificate with a QR code is issued for every single vaccine dose.

On you fill find participating pharmacies.

For individuals already fully vaccinated in the vaccination centres of the Federal States, the QR codes will be sent by post or provided on online portals. More information on this can be found here: (only available in German)

Recovery certificates are issued by medical offices, health departments and pharmacies.

Test certificates are available at test centres and medical laboratories. These can be converted into EU certificates via the Corona-Warn-App.

  • Why do I need the CovPass-App?

With the CovPass-App, you can provide secure, digital proof of COVID vaccinations or recovery from a COVID infection as needed. Simply present the QR code in the CovPass-App. Using the CovPass-App is voluntary.

  • Am I required to use the CovPass-App?

No. You can decide for yourself whether you want to use the CovPass-App. Using it is voluntary. The aim of the CovPass-App is to verify EU Digital COVID Certificates quickly and securely. You can delete the app at any time. If you delete the app, all of the information saved on the app is removed from your smartphone. Alternatively, you can prove your COVID immunity with the printed vaccination certificate or the usual yellow vaccination record.

  • What QR code can I scan with the CovPass-App?

The CovPass-App can only scan vaccination certificates (QR codes) that meet European specifications. These certificates are entitled ‘EU DIGITAL COVID VACCINATION CERTIFICATE’ or ‘EU COVID-19 VACCINATION CERTIFICATE’. They are issued by vaccination centres, doctors’ practices and pharmacies. Other QR codes that are issued in connection with COVID-19 vaccinations (e.g. invitation codes for a vaccination appointment, proof of vaccination that does not meet European certificate specifications) are not designed for the CovPass-App and cannot be recognised by the app.

  • Where is my data stored?

When the EU Digital COVID Certificates are created, your data is collected once by the issuing body (vaccination centre, doctor’s practice, pharmacy) and transmitted to the RKI for signing. The data is then deleted immediately. When you add the EU Digital COVID Certificate to the app, your personal data is only managed locally on your smartphone.
